چکیده

Several medications such as baclofen, amitriptyline and even antiepileptic drugs such as carbamazepine or vigabatrin are known to induce absence status epilepticus in patients with generalized epilepsies. Tiagabine (TGB) is effective in patients with focal epilepsies. However, TGB has also been reported to induce non-convulsive status epilepticus in several patients with focal epilepsies and in one patient with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. In animal models of generalized epilepsy, TGB induces absence status with 3-5 Hz spike-wave complexes. We describe a 32-year-old patient with absence epilepsy and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures since 11 years of age, who developed her first absence status epilepticus while treated with 45 mg of TGB daily. Administration of lorazepam and immediate reduction in TGB dosage was followed by complete clinical and electroencephalographic remission. This case demonstrates that TGB can induce typical absence status epilepticus in a patient with primary generalized epilepsy.

Non-convulsive status epilepticus induced by tiagabine in a patient with pseudoseizure

Tiagabine, a novel GABA reuptake inhibitor, has been reported to induce non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) in patients with epilepsy. We report a 27 year old female with history of pseudoseizure documented by video-EEG monitoring who presented confusion while on 56 mg per day of tiagabine. Electroencephalography showed generalized sharp and slow wave discharges, consistent with NCSE. The ...

Non-convulsive status epilepticus associated with tiagabine therapy in children

A case of a 7-year-old male with epilepsy who developed non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) with electroclinical features consistent with those of atypical absence seizures after adjunctive antiepileptic therapy of tiagabine (TGB) is reported. The patient had frequent generalised and rare partial seizures with generalised epileptic discharges on prior electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings....

Absence status in the elderly as a late complication of idiopathic generalized epilepsies.

The main categories of nonconvulsive status epilepticus are: complex partial and absence status. Absence status was reported to occur de novo in later life as a situation-related, single event. We report four cases of absence status with presentation after the age of 60 years. At admission, no history of epilepsy had been mentioned. The preliminary diagnosis of absence status occurring de novo ...

Pediatric Absence Status Epilepticus: Prolonged Altered Mental Status in an 8-Year-Old Boy

Absence status epilepticus is characterized by a prolonged state of impaired consciousness or altered sensorium with generalized electroencephalographic abnormalities. It is most commonly diagnosed in patients with known idiopathic generalized epilepsy; however, it may also be the first presentation of epilepsy. Due to the subtle and variable manifestations of the condition, absence status epil...

Idiopathic late-onset absence status epilepticus: A case report with an electroclinical 14 years follow-up

Late-onset absence status epilepticus (ASE) may be observed in adult and elderly patients as a late complication of idiopathic generalized epilepsy or de novo, usually related to benzodiazepines withdrawal, alcohol intoxication or psychotropic drugs initiation, but without history of epilepsy. EEG may be highly heterogeneous, varying from the 3 to 3.5 Hz spike-wave discharges typical of idiopat...
